ChatGPT adds a dedicated Maps page for local discovery
ChatGPT now has a dedicated Maps page at chatgpt.com/maps, giving place discovery its own entry point in the web app. The page describes Maps as a way to ask ChatGPT about what is nearby, including recommendations for places, local news and weather. Its central prompt invites people to share their location, while suggested prompts offer ways to get started. The page was marked “New” in ChatGPT’s navigation when checked on September 26, 2026. OpenAI has not published a separate, dated launch announcement for the page, so its precise rollout date and availability by market remain unclear.
The feature builds on location-aware answers that ChatGPT already supports. OpenAI’s Help Center says ChatGPT may estimate a general location from an IP address for local results. Sharing device location is optional and off by default; if enabled, more specific location information can help with nearby businesses, local news and weather. The same guidance says precise location is not separately stored outside the conversation, though places and maps included in an answer can remain in chat history until the conversation is deleted. OpenAI may also share location information with trusted providers that supply local listings or weather data.
A dedicated page makes this capability easier to find and frames ChatGPT as a place to begin a local search, rather than waiting for a map to appear inside an ordinary conversation. People can describe preferences in everyday language and ask follow-up questions in the same chat. That could make it simpler to compare nearby options or combine place suggestions with current local context. These are potential uses suggested by the interface, not a guarantee that every result will be complete or current.
The change also puts ChatGPT more directly into local discovery, an area where mapping and search services already compete for users and business visibility. For local businesses, the practical question will be which sources inform recommendations and how listings are selected; OpenAI has not described a ranking system on the Maps page.
