Meta brings AI Mode to Facebook Search
Meta is rolling out a new AI Mode inside Facebook Search, turning one of the world's largest social platforms into a more direct AI answer engine. The company announced the feature on June 15, 2026, alongside new AI editing tools for photos, videos and sharing suggestions.
The main change is how search works inside Facebook. Instead of only showing links, people, groups or marketplace results, AI Mode uses Meta AI to generate answers based on public content shared across Meta's apps. Meta says those answers can draw on public posts, Groups and Reels, so users can ask questions and get responses grounded in what real people are discussing, recommending or showing publicly. The company says the experience is powered by Muse Spark, its current AI model for consumer products.
That makes the announcement bigger than another chatbot placement. Facebook remains a daily habit for hundreds of millions of people, and search inside social platforms is increasingly where users look for recommendations, local information, shopping ideas, events and practical advice. By placing AI answers in that flow, Meta is competing not only with Google Search and TikTok-style discovery, but also with standalone assistants such as ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini.
For users, the benefit is convenience. A question about a restaurant, activity, product or community topic can be answered inside the app where related conversations already happen. The trade-off is trust and control. AI answers based on public social content may feel more personal than generic web search, but they also depend on ranking decisions, source selection, privacy boundaries and the quality of posts that happen to be public.
For creators and businesses, the change could reshape visibility on Facebook. Public posts, Reels and group discussions may become inputs for AI-generated answers, which means discoverability may depend less on a single post appearing in a feed and more on whether Meta's AI sees it as useful context. Brands, local businesses and community managers will have to think about content as searchable knowledge, not just social updates.
Meta is also adding AI photo presets and opt-in camera roll sharing suggestions, but AI Mode is the strategic signal. The AI race is moving from separate tools into default consumer surfaces, and Facebook Search is now part of that shift.
