OpenAI announces unlimited text chats for free ChatGPT users

OpenAI is expanding the free version of ChatGPT with unlimited text chats. The company says GPT-5.6 Luna will become the default model for Free and Go users, while unlimited text conversations and a new Think button for harder questions will arrive as the rollout continues. The announcement was published on August 6, but access is being phased in rather than switched on for everyone at once.

The change is part of a broader update to ChatGPT. Plus and Pro users are receiving an improved GPT-5.6 Sol for everyday questions, research, planning, writing and decisions. They also get a slider that lets them choose how much reasoning the model should use. OpenAI is trying to make the move from a quick answer to deeper thinking feel like one consistent experience instead of a jump between separate personalities or products.

For free users, Luna is positioned as the fast and affordable member of the GPT-5.6 family. The new Think button lets people ask the model to spend more time on a difficult question without requiring them to understand model names or technical settings. That lowers the barrier for students, casual users and people who only use ChatGPT occasionally but still want help with a complex problem.

There is an important qualification to the word unlimited. OpenAI says abuse-prevention guardrails still apply, and limits remain for file uploads, image generation and other tools. The offer covers ordinary text conversations, not every capability inside ChatGPT. Availability may also depend on the gradual rollout and the account or region being used.

The move has clear implications for the AI market. Removing a visible message cap makes ChatGPT more useful as an everyday utility and puts pressure on rivals to offer comparable access.
