OpenAI rolls out unified search across ChatGPT

OpenAI has rolled out a unified way to search across past chats, projects, images and documents in ChatGPT. The company added the feature to its official release notes on July 14, 2026. It is available globally on the web and in the iOS and Android apps, across every ChatGPT plan.

The new search starts from the ChatGPT sidebar. Users can search everything together or narrow results by content type, then open a matching conversation, project or file directly. This is different from asking ChatGPT to search the public web: the feature is designed to help people retrieve material they have already created, uploaded or worked with inside ChatGPT.

That may sound smaller than a new model launch, but it addresses a practical problem created by wider AI adoption. As people use ChatGPT for research, writing, coding, planning and image work, their accounts become large personal archives. Useful answers often disappear behind vague conversation titles or inside projects that are difficult to remember months later. Better retrieval makes that accumulated work more valuable and reduces the need to repeat prompts, upload the same document again or manually browse through a long history.

For individual users, the immediate benefit is continuity. A student can return to an earlier source document, a developer can reopen a debugging thread and a team member can find the project that contains a previous decision. Because the feature includes images and documents as separate result types, ChatGPT is becoming easier to use as a workspace rather than only as a stream of conversations.

For makers and businesses, the release highlights a broader product lesson: the usefulness of an AI assistant depends not only on model intelligence, but also on how well it organizes and retrieves context. Search, permissions, retention and clear boundaries between projects become more important as assistants hold more work. OpenAI's short announcement does not explain ranking, indexing speed or new administrator controls, so those details still need testing in practice.

No new model or autonomous capability is part of this update. Its significance is more ordinary and immediate: ChatGPT's growing archive is now easier to navigate for free and paid users alike.
