Connect ChatGPT to Google Calendar
Install the Google Calendar plugin, let ChatGPT find a suitable time, and schedule meetings with enough buffer time.
Managing a busy calendar often takes more attention than the meeting itself. You review several days, find a free block, and then check whether enough time remains before and after the meeting.
With the Google Calendar plugin, ChatGPT can review your availability and, following your instruction, add an event to your calendar. This guide helps you do that safely with one clearly defined task.
Check what you need
For this workflow, you need a ChatGPT account that provides access to Plugins and Google Calendar, plus a Google account containing the calendar you want to connect. The plugins and actions you can see may depend on your plan, device, region, and your organization’s settings.
- Decide in advance which Google calendar ChatGPT may use.
- Check that Google Calendar uses the correct time zone.
- Preferably use your own account and never share a password in the chat.
- Ask for permission before scheduling on someone else’s behalf or inviting guests.
Install the Google Calendar plugin
- Go to ChatGPT and sign in.
- Open Plugins.
- Search for Google Calendar.
- Click Install plugin.
- Click Continue to Google Calendar.
- Choose the Google account containing the calendar you want to use and click Continue.
- Review the requested permissions and click Continue only if you agree.
Check the connection
Start a new chat and type @ in the input field. Select Google Calendar from the list. Begin with a small, read-only check. This confirms that the correct account and calendar are connected without changing anything.
Use Google Calendar and only show tomorrow’s events. Do not change, delete, or schedule anything yet. Also name the calendar and time zone you used.
Check whether your own events are correct. If you see the wrong calendar, stop and connect the correct Google account before continuing.
Find a time and schedule it
A useful calendar instruction includes the date range, duration, working hours, required buffer time, title, and any attendee. Ask ChatGPT to propose options first when you want to review the result before it changes your calendar.
Use Google Calendar. Find a free time during my working hours this week for a 2-hour meeting with [NAME]. The time is only suitable if my calendar is also free for 30 minutes before and 30 minutes after the meeting. First show the best three options with the date, start and end time, and time zone. Do not change my calendar yet. After I choose an option: - create an event titled “[TITLE]”; - add [EMAIL ADDRESS] as a guest only if I confirm this; - leave the 30 minutes before and after it free; - finally, show exactly what you created.
Free time around an event is not automatically protected. If you want to prevent someone else from booking it, ask ChatGPT to create two separate private blocks titled “Preparation” and “Wrap-up” after you confirm.
Turn it into a weekly task
Do you schedule the same type of meeting every week? Test the instruction manually a few times first. Once it works reliably, turn it into a recurring task under Schedule.
Every Monday at 9:00 AM, check my Google Calendar for the upcoming working week. Find one free 2-hour block between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM, with 30 minutes free before and after it. Send me no more than three options first and change my calendar only after I confirm my choice.
Use the connection safely
- Always check the date, time zone, duration, calendar, and guests before confirming.
- Do not let ChatGPT delete or move an event without explicit permission.
- Do not put confidential information in the title or description unless necessary.
- Review the access you granted in Google and ChatGPT settings, and revoke it when you no longer use the connection.
- On a shared or work calendar, only use actions that comply with your organization’s rules.
If the @ mention does not work, check whether the plugin is installed and enabled. If an event is missing, check the connected Google account, selected calendar, and time zone. Reconnect the plugin if its authorization has expired.
